“Racism may wear a new dress, buy a new pair of boots, but neither it nor its succubus twin fascism is new or can make anything new. It can only reproduce the environment that supports its own health: fear, denial, and an atmosphere in which its victims have lost the will to fight.” – Toni Morrison

Unfazed and unequivocally, I stand in solidarity with Nneka Allen, CFRE, COC, PCCMide Akerewusi, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Econ), CSR-P, CDEP.Múthoní Karíukí HBSc, MPNL, CFRE, and the many others who have contributed to AFPs, and specifically Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter (AFP-GTC), with their time, talent, and financial resources and have not been valued and have not found it an authentically welcoming environment.

Take Action! Until there are demonstrated efforts toward addressing racism, it’s time to wave goodbye to AFP-GTC.

Here’s what you can do:

1. If you haven’t already done so, sign the petition calling on Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Global) to revoke AFP-GTC’s Ten-Star status: https://bit.ly/3Lg8jpa
2. Cease the renewal of your individual and organizational memberships of AFP GTC, until the repair is complete.
3. Boycott AFP GTC conferences, webinars, and workshops as a mark of protest against inaction by AFP GTC to resolve anti-Black racism among its Board.
4. Apply pressure on sponsors and agencies who continue to support AFP GTC while it perpetuates ongoing racism and withholds a genuine apology.

We acknowledge our responsibility and our commitment to keeping those who support the movement for racial equity within Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter informed. This update provides a snapshot of the current status of our request for a genuine and unfettered apology for the racist acts towards Black Board members and other Association stakeholders prior to 2019, in 2019, and continuing to this very day within the Toronto chapter of AFP.
