Last year I let my AFP membership lapse after many years. I thought about that very carefully. Yes, I was now not within an organization and would have to pay out of pocket, but primarily it was because I had lost faith in the institution designed to support a flourishing and inclusive fundraising profession. I do hope one day I can gain that faith back.

I’m coming from a place of hope, but also I don’t want my friends who have been dealing with racism in this sector and beyond their whole life to continue being unheard. This is an impassioned plea to AFP to lead and model what is possible. There is an opportunity for a breakthrough moment here that can set the stage for something powerful. Legal action aside, this is a human issue.

What has been asked for by Olumide, Nneka, and Múthoní for the last 4 years is so simple, and it still can be done. Until then, please do what you can to encourage AFP to listen and act, through your influence and your resources.
