“In my 28 years as a non-profit fundraiser and social impact advocate, I experience instances of racism on a weekly basis. Sadly, I have grown accustomed to much of it.”

Allow yourself to sit with these words from Mide Akerewusi, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Econ), CSR-P, CDEP. and reflect on what it means and how it must feel to be exposed to decades of racism and more chillingly, the cost to self in learning to exist within it.

One response to living within it, is to mobilize against it as Mide shares in this joint response with Nneka Allen, CFRE, COC, PCC to AFP-GTC’s April 12th, 2023 statement, a mere four years in the making.

“I realize increasingly the importance of my voice when it’s time to celebrate acts of justice, and when it’s time to speak out against acts of injustice.”

When an apology is clearly not an apology, it creates further harm. In my 28 years as a non-profit fundraiser and social impact advocate, I experience instances of racism on a weekly basis. Sadly, I have grown accustomed to much of it. However, there are some instances where it is important to speak out for the sake of healing and learning. This is one such instance.

I realize increasingly the importance of my voice when it’s time to celebrate acts of justice, and when it’s time to speak out against acts of injustice. In this article
Nneka Allen, CFRE, COC, PCC and I use our privilege to freely express the truth as we see it, knowing that it is vitally important to speak out while injustice prevails. Dr. King spoke it best: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”!
